True to Form by Dr. Eric Goodman brings to fruition eight years of intense study on how to best approach dozens of common ailments caused by the modern plague of poor posture. This book and the Foundation Training exercises within it combine simplicity with efficiency to bring you a solution to back pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, herniations and countless diseases that spring from bad posture and degenerative movement patterns.
Complacent adaptation is a behavior that we all suffer from, it is natural to the human body. Our bodies adapt, that is what they do best, our goal, once we have understood the problem and found a solution, is to utilize these mindful movements to correct our posture and bring our muscular-skeletal structure back to balance, allowing all the other organs and systems in our bodies to work properly and more efficiently. With practice and repetition, our bodies can regain its natural ability to move properly and gracefully, avoiding injuries, back pain, knee pain, headaches and potential surgeries. This is a key concept in our path to health, fitness, well-being and a pain free life.
Dr. Eric Goodman’s True to Form book explains how our sedentary lifestyle has led to an epidemic of chronic pain. We have adopted a sitting position that consumes our bodies day after day. On top of that we have added cars, computer and cellphones to our daily routines, furthering the degeneration process by adding more and more time in unhealthy postures. Most people’s heads are constantly pushing forward, with their heads doing the same, the pecks are overly tight, the upper back is overly stretched and in many cases severely rounded, the lower back can also be severely rounded, or hyperextended, depending on the case, glutes are weak, hamstrings and rotators are tight, knees are weak with a tendency to lock (which leads to massive deterioration) and the ankles are also weak, leading to poor feet placement which leads to more instability and degeneration over time. All these factors can be worsen when people take on sports and physical activities without correcting their posture and movements, this is made even worse when weight is added to the structure such as in the case of weight lifting (reason why so many bodybuilders and Cross Fit athletes end their careers early). The good news is that there is a way to improve these postures and movements and the answers rest within Dr. Eric Goodman’s True to Form book.
Dr. Eric Goodman has spent most of his life studying human physiology and movement. He has trained world-class athletes for better performance, and has healed people of all ages and occupations of lifelong debilitating pain and extreme surgeries. People of all ages can use this book and the resources in it to improve their life. “I was told by a spinal surgeon and by a world renowned trainer that if i kept riding my Road Bike like i do i would end up on a wheel chair because of my back issues. That was several years ago and i am riding better than ever at almost 70 years old. I do foundation exercises every day and have no back issues at all unless i stop doing the exercises for a few days!!! So i read everything that Eric Goodman writes and am helped and inspired by what he teaches. I don't know why it works but my sciatica has been painful enough i couldn't get out of bed without help and i have had to call an ambulance because of back pain due to disc problems. Nevertheless last week I rode my Road Bike in Malibu and Santa Monica and did the 10 mile climb in Latigo Canyon and several others for a total of 175 miles in a week with no pain at all.” - Carl A. “For the first time in years my neck and shoulder pain has been decreasing with every day I practice Foundation Training. It is an uncomplicated step by step program which I add to my current exercise regime. The program is teaching my muscles to do what they were designed to do- to provide support. For all people struggling with back, neck and shoulder pain and for the health professionals they are seeking advice from this is a must have.” – Roselea on May 19, 2016
“Eric Goodman is a genius! This book guides you on how to change your movement patterns that cause back pain and other chronic illnesses & educates you on how to develop muscles to support your everyday activities. Do yourself a favor & get the book! It's a great way to get to the 'root' of the problem as opposed to treating 'symptoms' of back pain. Head to the Foundation Training website to find a list of local Certified Instructors to work alongside with of that motivates you more!” – Harveyk on June 13, 2016
“I recommend this to all my patients, the ones that do it respond faster. I have his first book, and this one is just as great. “According to a recent Time Magazine article, Americans spend over $50 billion a year diagnosing and treating back pain. That amount represents more than the annual GDP of the majority of the world’s sovereign states based on United Nation’s numbers. Two: in a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine, of 98 people who were experiencing no back pain whatsoever and underwent MRIs, “52 percent had a disk bulge at least one level and 27 percent had a protrusion. Thirty-eight percent had an abnormality of more than one inter-vertebral disk.”
What do those stats mean in real life? Unless you are part of a very lucky small minority, you are either in pain right now, or are on a trajectory for future back pain if you do nothing to change the underlying degeneration of your body and spine.
So what can one do? One option is to load up on pain relievers, and trudge ahead. According to statistics, Americans consume 80% of the entire global supply of prescription pain killers, notching 28,000 deaths from overdose in 2014. And that number doesn’t include over-the-counter stuff. The other option is to make some simple, but fundamental changes in the way you use your body. That’s what Foundation Training, and this book, is about.
As the co-director of a holistic health center in Taiwan, I find Foundation Training invaluable both personally and professionally.
Don’t be fooled by the simplicity of Foundation Training. The movements may be few and simple, but they have been carefully designed and perfected over years of practical application, and can, as thousands of people have attested to, deliver a big impact when it comes to changing the way we use our bodies, and relieving pain; not just in backs, but necks, shoulders, and knees as well.” - Jeffrey H.
